Binghamton, N.Y. (WBNG Binghamton) Local firefighters got a hands-on lesson Wednesday with ethanol fires.

The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control hosted a course with the Binghamton Fire Department's Hazardous Materials crew Wednesday.

The course was designed to teach firefighters about the challenges an alcohol-based fire can bring and provide them a real life scenario.

A tanker simulation showed various aspects firefighters could expect from a spill and fire involving ethanol.

"With the simulator that they currently have, it creates a much more real scenario. Obviously everyone here, if you ask them afterwords, they're going to tell you this is a very worthwhile course and we've learned lessons here that we didn't know before and always adding to your knowledge base is a positive thing," said Binghamton Assistant Chief Steve Faughnan.

While incidents like these are rare, Faughnan stressed the importance of being prepared.
