Norwich, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A fire at an ammunition manufacturing shop in Norwich is under control after crews from three area stations respond.

Norwich, Oxford, and Chenango County Bureau Fire departments responded to a fire on Route 12 about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

It was at Dale Wesson's Firearms.

"The fire's maintained in the basement, there's significant amount of damage in the basement, and then smoke damage throughout the second and first floor of the building," said Chief Tracy Chawgo of Norwich Fire Department.

The fire started in the basement where most of the ammunition is stored.

Employees evacuated the building and alerted first responders about the ammunition before entering.

"The person involved happened to notice a fire was happening tried to get out and get the extinguishers to put it out, wasn't able to get to it in time, just evacuated everybody," said Kieth Lawton, Operation Manager at Dale Wesson's Firearms.

"I know that one of their employees did burn his hand trying to put the fire out he was taken care of here on the scene and released and then we have one firefighter that got tangled up in some wire and sustained an injury but he's fine, he's being evaluated and released also," said Chief Chawgo.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
