Town of Barker, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A kitchen fire Friday morning damaged a home and claimed the life of a dog.

The Chenango Fire Company was called around 7:50 a.m. to 4 Jackson Heights, Town of Barker.

The fire started in the kitchen, according to fire chief Dave Leader.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames quickly and contain the fire to the kitchen.

There was heavy smoke damage throughout the mobile home, said Leader.

The people who live there were not home, but the fire department took three dogs out of the home.

Two were still breathing and one was not, according to Leader. They were taken to a local animal hospital.

Broome County fire investigators are looking into the cause.

Fire Departments from Whitney Point and Choconut Center also responded.
