Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) This winter, the Southern Tier has seen dozens of fires keeping firefighters at the ready.

To stay fresh on their skills, local firefighters revisited some training tips.

In Vestal on Sunday, the Hallstead Fire Department worked on properly using their Air-Paks in emergency situations.

"With all of the local fires we've been having, Broome County has been having and us in Pennsylvania, you need to do it," said James Shafer of the Hallstead Fire Department.

About two dozen local firefighters worked on putting out simulated car and house fires.

Shafer said volunteer numbers have been down recently because of the economy.

He said they're always looking for men and women to join the department.
