Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Flames broke out 7:33 a.m. Wednesday at the Ellis Brothers Furniture store on Water Street in Binghamton.
Binghamton Deputy Fire Chief, Larry Ostanek said the fire started on the showroom floor of the contemporary store, burned through four floors and then out of the roof of the building.
Ostanek estimated the temperature inside the building was between 1,500 and 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Fire crews were initially told to evacuate the building, and take a defensive approach.
"Once the combustibles inside, the furniture, the carpeting, that burns very hot and there was nowhere for the heat to go, so it became an inferno inside the building," Ostanek said.
Neighboring businesses were also evacuated.
According to the Ellis family, the main building of the furniture store, located near the Metro Center, will open Thursday and continue operating as normal during regular business hours. Customers who have any questions should call the office.
Ostanek said there was no concern the building would collapse. However, he said it may have to come down due to significant damage. City engineers will need to make a full analysis of the building before a decision is made.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time. Investigators said there was no foul play suspected.
Binghamton Police reported a street closure.Water Street is closed from Court Street to Henry Street.
Binghamton High School and the Department of Social Services closed at 10:30 a.m. because of air quality concerns due to smoke from the fire.
