Deposit, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A portion of the former Deposit school building collapsed last week forcing the village to declare a local state of emergency.
The roof on the old brick building partially collapsed last Thursday. Now, the entire front sidewalk is closed off and part of a nearby street.
The Deposit Village Mayor John O’Connor said that set up might be more permanent than temporary.
"I expect if it has sat for years and years to get to this point I wouldn't expect anything quick to happen from here on out," said O'Connor, "so that's why I say the village has done what it can do up to this point."
The building is now partially collapsed with boarded up windows, but still holds memories for almost every person living in Deposit.
"I was just reminiscing about some of the classes I had here," said one nearby resident, "I went to elementary school and my sixth grade classroom was on the upper floor on the right."
People in the village are now wondering who will take care of the neglected property.
"It's sad, yeah, a lot of people in the area grew up there, went to school there," said another Deposit resident, "But now its dangerous and it needs to be taken care of before something horrible happens."
Every five days the Deposit Mayor will sign a temporary state of emergency order that keeps the surrounding area closed off. He said that's as much as the village can do.
"It'll change fire response, it'll change ambulance response, it'll change police response," O'Connor said, "and that's just the way it is."
The village that's home to less than 2,000 people can't afford to take over demolition costs.
"Well what needs to happen probably is demolition. Just from the safety standpoint," the Mayor said, "but that's out of the Village's hands."
O'Connor said the village has been in a legal battle with the building's owner for years.
"Basically our hands are tied financially and legally," he said.
The building will stay in its current condition for as long as that continues.
According to tax records the owner of the property is Deposit Brick Building, LLC.
