Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) In the wake of some of the biggest holiday shopping of the season, a local not-for-profit organization is partnering with national charities and raising awareness about the need for charitable gifts this season.

#GivingTuesday kicks off Dec. 3.

The United Way of Broome County says #GivingTuesday is a movement that will encourage people to spend with a purpose and raise awareness for charitable giving in the county and across the country.

The second annual #GivingTuesday is embracing social media. Organizers say #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national movement around the holidays and show people that the holidays can be about giving -- and giving back.

The United Way of Broome County helps fund 32 local programs.

Executive Director Alan Hertel said without any charitable dollars coming in, funding local programs would be impossible.

"Charitable giving is a critical part of any not for profit's budget. It really on average accounts for at least a third of an organizations totally operating budget, so we rely very heavily on donations from the community," Hertel said.
