Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) There are more 16,000 veterans living in Broome County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Multiple groups join together to assist them with finding a civilian job.
Wednesday, multiple organizations, including the New York National Guard and the Department of Labor, and sponsored a job fair to help with employment of those who have served their country.
It's called Hiring of Heroes, and nearly 100 veterans registered to talk and network with potential employers Wednesday afternoon at the New York State Armory in Binghamton.
Veterans offer critical job skills for which employers are looking, according to organizers.
"The veteran is such a dedicated loyal and competent individual that has outstanding leadership skills and has all of those type of skills that the employer is here looking for today," said Kathy Poynton, the director of events.
The Hiring of Heroes is part of a nationwide effort to provide job opportunities to veterans, reserve members, active members and spouses of all branches of the U.S. military.
