Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Trick-or-treaters aren't able to collect candy door-to-door in Owego like they usually would since many homes remain damaged from the flood,

But the Owego community is making the most of it.

About one thousand people put on their costumes, decorated their cars and headed out to the Owego Apalachin Free Academy Parking Lot to Trunk-or-Treat.

"You don't have to walk as far, and it's just easier. Everybody's in the same place," says Malorie Bennett of Owego.

Several women from around the community came up with the idea to organize the event. Within weeks they were able to collect hundreds of pounds of candy, and plenty of costumes for those who needed them.

They say the event was such a success, they started to run out of candy by the end of the first hour.

"I've seen a lot of grown-ups smiling, a lot of people meeting up with friends they haven't seen in a while, a lot of families getting to go out and do something that's free and fun," says event organizer Christina Bangel.

Kids and their parents tell Action News they like trunk-or-treating because it's easier for them to get around and collect candy fast.

Officials say, it's also a safer alternative.

"The kids aren't walking through a lot of traffic, cutting across streets, so safety-wise, it's another great idea. It's just a really great event. I don't think I've ever seen so many kids on Halloween in my life," says Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard.

"They say it's the biggest thing since the flood, and I think everyone deserves it, getting out and getting together," says Jim Morris of Owego.

Organizers say they may plan another event for Christmas.
