Town of Afton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) 22-year-old from Harpursville is charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated after a fatal crash in Afton early Sunday.

Ryan Lewis, of Harpursville, is charged with vehicle manslaughter in the second degree and driving while intoxicated.

The crash happened at approximately 2:20 a.m. Sunday on Afton Lake Road. State Police say Lewis lost control of his vehicle, a 2006 Subaru Impreza, while driving around a curve in the roadway. The vehicle went off the road and hit a tree on the passenger side. The front seat passenger, Joelyn L. Sines, 24, of Harpursville, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mitchell Birch and Caleb Gregory, both 22, of Afton, were in the backseat. They were taken to UHS Wilson Medical Center and are in stable condition.

Lewis is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Wilson Hospital. Police say he is scheduled to appear in the Town of Afton Court at a later date.

The New York State Police was assisted in the investigation by the Afton Fire Department and EMS personnel.
