Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) If you're a senior citizen, the City of Binghamton hopes to help you save on your STAR tax exemptions.
If you need a second glance over your tax exemptions, you'll have a second chance to get one.
Seniors have to re-apply for STAR exemptions each year, and you only have until March 1st to do so.
The STAR exemption reduces school taxes, but there are others for property taxes.
Elderly people have the chance to have someone help them read between the lines at the First Ward Senior Center.
All you need to do is bring proof of age that you're over 65, and your 2010 income.
"The seniors have very low incomes," said Diana Shores from the city assessors office. "A lot of people do, but the seniors especially, who may be living on social security, they're not getting raises in their income. They may be living on a pension. So any savings they can get helps them tremendously."
Another session will be held on February 23 at 12:30 p.m. At the First Ward Senior Center, 226 Clinton Street.
To make an appointment, call the Assessor's Office at 772-7002, or the First Ward Senior Center at 729-6214.
For low income exemptions, you have to bring all of your 1099 income statements for 2011.
For enhanced STAR exemptions for school tax relief, bring your 2010 federal or state income tax form, or a 1099 statement with a renewal form.
