Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Hundreds of family and friends of fallen officers gathered to honor those lost while serving their communities. Police week continued Tuesday morning with a memorial breakfast at the Owego Treadway Inn.

Scholarships were awarded to local students studying criminal justice and recognition awards were given to local businesses that annually support police week.

One of the keynote speakers was Dale Johnson, a retired officer of the Ithaca Police Department

"They're all heroes, every one of them are heroes. And we need to remember them and who's going to remember them if we don’t as brother and sisters in this field," Johnson said.

This year's event highlighted the 1986 death of a part-time park police officer and Ithaca College Sergeant William Chapin.

His name was added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall.

A special acknowledgment was also made for Officer David Smith, whose death is still fresh in the minds of the local police community.
