Investigators: Damascus Fire Was Preventable

January 30, 2012 Updated Jan 30, 2012 at 11:30 AM EDT

Windsor, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Broome County Fire Investigators say a fire in Damascus Saturday afternoon was an accident - but it could have been prevented.

Investigators say the garage fire at 185 Atwell Hill Road started because ashes from a fireplace were not thrown out properly.

Instead they were put in a can in the garage, starting the fire.

Fortunately, a quick response from seven surrounding fire departments kept the fire from spreading.

Crews had it out within 15 minutes.

Investigators remind neighbors to put ashes in a metal non-combustible container with a secure lid.
