Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Black Friday shoppers had great deals to get up early for. The sales were there Friday morning, but a lot of shoppers were not.

The day after Thanksgiving is usually one of the biggest shopping days of the year, but at the Oakdale Mall, Black Friday shoppers were lax.

Shoppers blame the small crowds this morning on the large crowds last night. Many local stores opened their doors on Thanksgiving night, including some in the mall that opened at 8 p.m.

"We've been out since 9-10 p.m. (on Thursday). We came up a little be later than normal but we kinda beat the earlier crowds since the stores opened earlier," said Black Friday shopper Eliza Ely, of Montrose.

An employee of Victoria's Secret said the store saw the heaviest traffic from 8 p.m. Thursday until 1:00 a.m. Friday.

"I think since they opened the stores earlier that it slowed the people down and there's not one crowd, there's two," said Madison Severcool, a Black Friday shopper.

With Thanksgiving falling late this year, the 2013 shopping season is as short as possible, just 26 days in between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Action News talked to several shoppers who said they didn't mind the small crowds; it make the trip more relaxing and they were able to search for items instead of rush.

"We've been actually able to browse instead of running in, grabbing what we want. We've been actually able to look around," Ely said.

For one Greene mother, Black Friday shopping meant getting out of the house right after Thanksgiving dinner and hitting the sales, starting at 4 p.m. Thursday.

"You can do it smart and get a lot of stuff," Lori Johns said.

Johns said the key to Black Friday shopping is planning. She has been preparing for her Black Friday shopping trip for a month.

"Get online so you find a lot of things about where the best sales are, you gotta map your plan, coupons, anything you can do to get it to come down," Johns said.

Black Friday sales continued throughout Friday, but most of them ended at noon.

If you missed out on the sales on Friday ,there's still Cyber Monday.

Most websites are offering deals similar to Black Friday online all day on Monday.
