Johnson City Wants Out Of Waste Managment Business

The Village of Johnson City wants out of the waste management business, after problems related to costly repairs to a collapsed wall at the Binghamton Johnson City Joint Sewage Treatment Facility.

Mayor Dennis Hannon and Broome County Executive Patrick Brennan plan to discuss how the plant can become a County operation.

Hannon says handling sewage treatment plant issues is very complex and hopes the plant could one day be out of Village hands.

A significant amount of federal money was used to build the plant, making it impossible for the plant to be sold to a private owner.

Hannon says there has been discussion in the past about the County running the plant but hopes there will be headway in the conversation now.

"We almost need a separate mayor and board just to stay on top of what's going on over there with the sewage plant. We do have the sewer board but with so many issues going on in the Village this is just one thing on our plate that sometimes is difficult to get to," says Hannon.

If discussions do move forward, the City of Binghamton must also agree to county ownership.
