Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney put their policies head to head before the entire nation Wednesday night.
It was the first of three scheduled debates, and members of the Broome County Democratic party were glued to the screen during a watch party.
The county party chairman said debates like this are crucial for earning the public's trust, especially so close to the election.
But he added that anything can happen on live television.
"I remember watching the debate when President Ford said the Soviet Union didn't dominate Eastern Europe and that changed a lot of minds in a very, very close election. President Carter won the election," said Broome County Democratic Party Chairman James Testani.
Our tries to reach the Broome County Republican committee for this story were unsuccessful.
