Vestal, N.Y. (WBNG Binghamton) The American Heart Association received a large amount of money to fund research and build awareness for heart disease.

Weis Supermarkets presented the association with a check for more than $11,000 at a Healthy Heart event Saturday.

"We feel the American Heart Association does great things for our community here," said Mike Umstead, District Manager of Weis. "We're proud to sponsor them with this."

Weis raised the money from a customer donation campaign in February, which is American Heart Month.

They also held a raffle ticket sale at the Oakdale Mall during that month.

Customers could also try free healthy samples or get their blood tested at Saturday's event.

The store raised more money this year than they did last year for the same campaign.

Weis plans to continue its partnership with the American Heart Association.

It will take part in the 2014 Southern Tier Heart walk next weekend at Binghamton University.
