Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A national movement that places Christmas wreaths on the headstones of fallen war heroes makes its way to Tioga and Bradford counties.

Wreath Across America Day places the decorations to remember the fallen, honor those who served, and teach children the meaning of freedom.

"We do not forget our fallen heroes at Christmas time, nor do we forget our veterans who served to get our freedom also at Christmas time," said Jim Raftis, Chairman of Post 1371, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The ceremony had family of Owego Army Specialist Charles Bilbrey, who died in Irag in 2007, there to lay a wreath.

"It's an objective of wreaths across America to place a Christmas wreath on a headstone of every veteran. In Tioga County that would mean 5,000 wreaths. That's a big big big project. But you've got to start small and just keep expanding on it," said Raftis.

Before the ceremony there was a prayer and moment of silence for the victims of yesterday's school shooting in Connecticut.

All flags at the memorial will be at half staff until December 18th.
