Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton is considered the Carousel Capital of the World -- but why?

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston and County Historian Gerald Smith have set out to answer those questions and more with an initiative called "Path Through History Weekend."

For the first two weekends in June, historical landmarks in Broome County will be highlighted by the county for visitors to explore and learn.

"It's meant to get people off of the interstates, go to destination stops, enjoy the ambiance, but also to learn a little bit about the history and heritage of that community," said Smith.

The initiative was started by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to bring tourism to the historical sections of New York state.

In Broome County alone, there are nearly 30 tourist destinations that make the list.
