Learning the rules of war
Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A group of local students are taking on an international problem by understanding the rules of war. BOCES Evertech High School students joined a national program that teaches the international rules of war. Then, they create a campaign to raise awareness about a particular issue. The students learned that most violence on TV and in video games violates that law. "I think that that was shocking for them to realize that there are limits to war there are a set of international rules that every country in the world has signed to abide by," said Jessica Lane, American Red Cross Youth Coordinator. "And I think it was surprising for them to know that." The Central New York Region of the American Red Cross chose five schools to be part of the first action campaign. "As future leaders, as educators, as future leaders of our community," Lane said, "Everyone needs to be educated about humanitarian international law so that we can have a lens for understanding conflict around the world." The group of 10th grade students will compete for a chance to share their action campaign during a National Youth Symposium in Washington D.C. this summer.
