Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Staples of the holiday season include Christmas trees and home cooked food, but also alcohol. It's one of the most profitable times of the year for liquor stores.
"Business is amazing. We couldn't ask for a better crowd for sure," said Nicole Sabato, manager of Northgate Liquor and Wine.
There's something about the holiday season that causes an increase in liquor sales. It is a time of festive celebration. But what are people buying, and why? Vodka, Scotch, and bubbly are flying off the shelves.
"Lots of champagnes people are buying. Lots of spirits," said Sabato.
Sabato says the atmosphere of the holidays is what boosts the sales.
"Family get togethers, having your friends around, it's a great time to celebrate," said Sabato.
Also the fact that most families are hanging around inside and not doing much driving makes it an opportune time to enjoy a drink or two.
More and more people are gifting liquor as presents.
"We've been selling a lot of scotches. Brown liquors, bourbons, things like that. They're unique," said Sabato.
Across town at Parkway Wine and Spirits, their sales increase almost 50 percent during this time of year.
"People are throwing parties. People are giving gifts. People are celebrating," said Josh Enfield, manager of Parkway Wine and Spirits.
So by all means have a good time these holidays. But please don't drink and drive.
