Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A nine-year-old girl from Candor shaved her head and raised more than $700.

Arleighlynn Hurd decided a year ago that she would do whatever it took to raise money for the St. Bald rick's Foundation, an organization dedicated to conquering childrens cancer.

Early Saturday afternoon, Arleighlynn got her chance to follow through.

"I'm here to shave my head," said Arleighlynn Hurd.

Although she has been persistent with the idea of shaving her head and raising money for this cause, she credits her ability to follow through to a close family friend.

"I really wanted to do it and Liz was telling me I really could do it," Hurd said.

Elizabeth Siegard not only helped motivate Arleighlynn, but she was the one who planned and organized the event in the Owego Elks Lodge.

"I'm hoping this one will be the first annual Owego Head Shaving Extravaganza and hopefully there will be more," Siegard said.

Siegard also got in on the fun and shaved her head as well.

After having a child for the first time last year, she said she was compelled to help with this cause.

"I just can't imagine being a parent and going through that," Siegard added.

Dozens attended Siegard's event and they raised just more than $3,500, $1,500 short of their $5,000.

However, Siegard and Arleighlynn are not giving up. Arleighlynn is now charging $5 to people who want to rub her head, as a new tactic to raise money for St. Baldrick's and reach their goal.
