Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A local sailor wins a prestigious Navy award.

Jarrod Birdsall of Vestal recently won the Navy's Blue Jacket award, which recognizes an outstanding sailor. Birdsall, a graduate of Vestal High School, swam throughout his high school years so he figured the Navy would be a good fit for him.

He is stationed in Jacksonville right now so he wasn't available for an interview, but his mother was, and she couldn't be more proud.

"He's just always trying to do better. You know and he keeps getting these awards and stuff. It's just great. He's going to go see the world, you know? His deployment will be coming along before too long and he really will get to see the world," said his mother Linda Birdsall.

Birdsall was one of 300 sailors in his squadron eligible to win the award.
