Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A few local homeowners opened their doors to give a behind the scenes look at solar power.

The 2013 Southern Tier Solar Home Tour gave people the chance to explore solar power options as they toured homes in Binghamton with solar technology.

The event was put on by ETM Solar Works.

Homeowners answered questions about the advantages of using solar technology. John Patterson wanted people to know how he was saving money and helping environment through his use of solar power.

"My wife and I, we go out every day and look at our meter, and watch that arrow go backward," Patterson said. "And it gives us like a little good feeling every day that we're producing power back to the system and that we're not paying for it."

Event organizers wanted people to know that even a cloudy city like Binghamton can save a lot of money and energy by switching to solar power.

"We have enough sun in Binghamton that people can generate all of their electricity," Gay Canough of ETM Solar Works said. "Not just some, but all of their electricity from solar energy."

ETM Solar Works wants people to go to their website if they have any questions about solar energy.
