Lockheed Martin looking at layoffs

October 16, 2013 Updated Oct 16, 2013 at 2:14 PM EDT

Rosslyn, VA (WBNG Binghamton) Lockheed Martin announced pending layoffs but can not say what impact it might have on the workforce at the plant in Owego.

Lockheed Martin’s Mission Systems and Training business said it will reduce its U.S. workforce by approximately 600 positions. The employees will be notified on Nov. 6.

"This action is necessary to address continuing challenges in our business environment, including continued uncertain program funding, delays in contract awards and an extremely competitive market. While the government shutdown did impact our business this action is independent from that event," said Keith Little, Lockheed Martin MST Media Relations Manager.

Little said the company is still determining the best way to make the reductions while continuing to deliver to its customers. Until employees are notified in November it can not give site specific numbers on layoffs.
