Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) As the Maine Endwell School District gets ready for the new school year with new additions. 4 years from concept to completion, it celebrates a $60 million dollar district wide capital project.
Action News reporter Matt Markham shows us what new things students will see when they go back to school.
Everything needs a little sprucing up after a while, sometimes a long while.
"Most of this district has not had major renovations done to it in over thirty years," said Joseph Stoner, M-E District Superintendent.
Some of M-E's capital project money went to replace windows and a new building façade
Behind it "the science classes were not up-to-date, and they needed really to be able to be updated," Stoner said.
Now there are eight brand-new rooms. They have "smart" white board technology. That allows for more interactive learning.
"If we give a quiz or do a quick check on what they know, then they'll be able to use a clicker, and we'll be able to get instantaneous data and feedback," said Claire Hackett, a 9th-grade teacher at M-E High School.
Back outside, new field turf, a new stadium, and a new track. The field is multi-purpose "for varsity sports, it's lined for football, field hockey, both girls and boys soccer, and boys and girls lacrosse," Stoner said.
And it makes playing in bad weather easier than the old field before.
"It'd be really muddy and the ball would move really bad. But on the turf, it's a lot better," said Sam Bernstein, a sophomore at M-E.
There is a new eight-lane swimming pool.
Teachers are getting ready this week.
"A lot of furniture still has to be moved in, bookshelves for all of the books, and the student desks," Hackett said.
They all need to be in place for when few hundred students arrive next Thursday.
The Superintendent says that the project was actually finished under-budget. The school board will decide what to do with the rest of the money, which will most likely go to repaving parking lots and other infrastructure projects.
The district will offer tours of the new athletic facilities tomorrow from 10:00 am to Noon, before the football game.
