Man chokes on coffee, crashes car

Town of Maine, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A man was taken to the hospital Monday morning with a head injury after passing out at the wheel and crashing his truck.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, around 7:30 a.m., Ricky Kie, 55, of Castle Creek, was driving a 2004 Ford F-150 southbound on Airport Road.

He was drinking coffee and began to choke and passed out, according to Sgt. Thomas Williams.

The truck went off the road, crossed the center line and took out a fire hydrant. The vehicle then crossed onto Upper Stella Ireland Road and went off of the road, nearly missing a tree.

Kie was semi-conscious and taken to Wilson Hospital by Union Ambulance for head injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt, according to Sgt. Williams.

Fire departments from East Maine and Choconut Center responded along with the Sheriff's Office.
