Town of Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Town of Binghamton lacks proper controls to keep track of, spend and collect taxpayer money, according to a recent state audit.
New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released a report Wednesday highlighting problems with both the town's collection of money and protection of its informational assets.
The report said the town supervisor failed to design proper controls to oversee incoming revenue the spending of the public's money.
The audit found the town's youth program was missing at least $4,250 dollars from its account.
There were also unauthorized changes to water and sewer payments, and nearly $50,000 more in payments were late.
The Comptroller's Office also found important computerized records were not protected and could have become compromised.
According to the report, the town is responding to the suggestions made by the comptroller to fix the problems in the future.
