(WBNG Binghamton) A Montrose police officer is accused of stealing thousands in cash from a woman's wallet.

The Montrose Police Department said Rhonda Smith, 43, has been placed on administrative leave.

She's accused of taking $2,400 from a wallet belonging to Christina Lopez sometime between July 25 and July 27.

Lopez said she had $5,000 cash in her wallet because she was getting ready to move and had stayed a weekend at Smith's home.

On July 28, Lopez texted Smith and told her the money was missing. Smith told Lopez to meet her in the park in Montrose and that it was important, according to the police complaint.

When Lopez met Smith in the park, Smith allegedly jumped in her car, asked Lopez if she had ever done something bad, and handed Lopez $700.

Smith told Lopez she needed the money for plane tickets for her son from Alaska and denied taking any more money, according to the complaint.

Smith was charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

Smith is scheduled to appear in Magisterial District Court in Montrose for a preliminary hearing on Monday.
