Oneonta, NY (WBNG Binghamton) New information leads to the release of a man formerly charged with the murder of an Oneonta woman.
Police say the second degree murder charge has been dropped against 27-year-old William Sprague.
Sprague was arrested Saturday after police found 26-year-old Sonya Ridge unconscious in an apartment at 162 River Street.
Sprague was released Thursday when new information surfaced.
Action News spoke to Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller today.
Miller says this is a matter between the police department and the District Attorney's office.
On Wednesday, The Oneonta Daily Star cited a source close to the investigation who says the autopsy results showed Ridge died of a brain aneurysm.
That could be the result of a head injury or a preexisting condition.
A felony complaint filed by the Oneonta Police Department in Oneonta City Court states Sprague attempted to rape Ridge and then killed her by inflicting blunt force trauma causing bleeding and bruising on her brain.
The Oneonta Police department is still investigating and charges could be re-filed.
The District Attorney's office felt they didn't have enough evidence to hold Sprague on the charges.
