(WBNG Binghamton) New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announces a partnership with Facebook to prevent illegal gun sales through its social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram.

Previously, gun sellers were able to market weapons on the social media websites, and encourage people to contact them for sales without background checks, which are required in New York State.

Now, Facebook will actively work to prevent and block those transactions.

"It has been too easy for practically anyone to go on to one of these sites," said NYS Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, "Pick out a gun, and contact the seller to negotiate a price."

Facebook's new policy will allow only people 18 or older to promote gun shows.

Facebook is not an e-Commerce website, which means no guns can be purchased directly from the site.
