NYSEG Crews Restoring Power

Nichols, NY (WBNG Binghamton) High winds and fallen trees proved to be the main cause of damage to the Southern Tier, leaving the potential for widespread power outages to residents.

A NYSEG crew tells Action News they worked through the night to get power back on for some of its customers.

"It's been a long night, it's been an all-nighter, so we're dragging a little bit right now," said Tom Toton of NYSEG in Vestal.

Manager Clay Ellis says crews are following the proper steps to restore power.

"It could have been a lot worse, but other areas of NYSEG did get hit hard, we kind of dodged a bullet I guess," said Toton.

The first thing to do is damage assessment.

That's looking at all of the downed power lines and trees, seeing which areas were hit the hardest.

Delaware County remains with the largest number of outages at 1,300, as of 6 pm on Tuesday.

"I don't know of too many people that will be out, I'm going to say 4,5, 6 hours, maybe someone might be 8 hours but it's a lot better than someone towards the city," said Toton.

Residents on a back road in Nichols say their power went out around 4 pm Monday, came back on briefly around 8 pm, and then was out overnight until around noon on Wednesday.

"You know the biggest amount of customers get the attention first, and unfortunately people are up here on these dirt roads and out in the woods sometimes are last, and you can see why," said Toton.

NYSEG manager Clay Ellis says even though the impact of Hurricane Sandy wasn't as bad as expected, he still stands by his statement that some residents could go days before power is restored.
