Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) National night out is taking place throughout Broome County.
This year marks the 31st for events in more than 16,000 communities across the nation.
People are gathering together in an attempt to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
At the Boys and Girls Club in Binghamton, kids were able to enjoy food, fun, and games. The event was used as a way to not only entertain but to educate the kids.
The night "out" is focused on getting youth involved in healthy activities, before they become part of the problem.
"We have a demonstration by an officer and a drug dog and a police dog,” said event volunteer Marylou Rutkowski. “And just other things that try to tell the kids to be careful when they see something going on. Be careful to stay away from situations themselves. And just be aware that there is crime in the area, but it doesn't have to rule their life."
Endicott, Vestal and the Town of Maine also took part in National Night Out.
Neighbors told Action News that safety is a number one priority. They said they are ready to fight back against criminals who fill their streets with crime and violence.
