Nearly $2M in Federal Money for Rural Healthcare

Elmira, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Extension of medicare programs mean $1.6 million is headed to rural hospitals in Southern Tier.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) stood with hospital and local officials at Saint Joseph's Hospital Friday to announce the $1.6 million for five rural hospitals.

The other four hospitals that will receive payments are Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, St. James Mercy Health Hospital in Hornell, Ira Davenport Memory Hospital in Bath, and Corning Hospital in Corning.

The money comes from an extension approved by Congress for two medicare payment programs.

The programs expired Sept.30, 2012.

Congress approved the extension as part of the year-end fiscal cliff deal.
