Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park may have lost a few members this year, but now it's proud to welcome a new animal to the family.

Mai Li is a Red Panda, who comes to the area from the Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada.

Red Pandas are native to the bamboo forests and mountain regions of China.

The Panda was introduced to the public this week, and the staff says she's still a little shy.

"Everybody's crazy about it here," said David Conklin, Interim Executive Director for the Bingamton Zoo. "Typically if she's inside the enclosure, she'll come right up to the glass, and she's curious about people. She hasn't been in the exhibit long. She's a little bit nervous about being out in the yard part of it."

Less than 3,000 adult red pandas live in the wild.

Mai Li is just one year old, but zookeepers say someday she can help breed more pandas for people to see.
