Binghamton (WBNG Binghamton) The Binghamton City Clerk's Office will be open this Sunday for the sole purpose of issuing Marriage Licenses.

The Marriage Equality Act goes into effect this Sunday, July 24th.

This means that same-sex couples can legally marry in the state of New York.

Same-sex couples and opposite sex couples can visit the Binghamton City Clerk's office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

According to advocate Joshua B Ludzki, Judge Molly Fitzgerald will be at the office from 10a.m. to 11 a.m. to consider waivers.

There is typically a 24- hour waiting period before a marriage ceremony can take place.

However, a judge in the court of a couple's home county can override this hold.

Marriage licenses cost 40- dollars and must be signed by both applicants in the presence of the city clerk.

The Clerk's office has already received several phone calls from couples anticipating this historical day.

No other licenses will be issued that day.
