New and higher fines for distracted driving go into effect

Albany, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Higher fines for those caught using a cellphone while driving take effect in New York State.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the new and increased fines for distracted driving violations, like texting while driving.

The fines are part of the 2013-14 state budget.

There are new minimum fines and higher maximum fines.

For all offenses the minimum fine is $50.

For a first offense, maximum fine increases to $150.

For a second offense within 18 months the maximum goes up to $200.

For a third or subsequent offense within 18 months the maximum is $400.
