Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The prospect mountain Route 17 and I-81 upgrade has another local project making some changes to its plans.

The city of Binghamton is currently developing plans to extend the multi-use trail at Cheri Lindsey Park, eventually connecting it to Otsiningo Park.

The original plans would have taken the trail along the Chenango River, which means the project would come in conflict with ongoing construction. The ensuing wait would mean federal funding set aside wouldn't be used by the deadline.

The new plan runs along Truesdell Street and then onto Chenango Street where a pedestrian lane will be placed on the west side and bike lanes will be placed on both sides up to Bevier Street.

Local leaders say it will help make the area much safer.

"It will make an official connection. I would think that a lot of pedestrians and bicyclists were using this route anyway," said Binghamton City Engineer Phillip Krey

Krey said they are accepting comments about the project until the end of the month.
