New room for new art
Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The building that houses Tioga County Council on the Arts was filled with people Friday for the first time since it was filled with the murky Susquehanna River. After finding a building to permanently house the organization last year, the Council had a lot of cleaning up to do. The September 2011 flood left the building inundated with water up to the basement rafters, which greatly reduced the amount of floor space for the gallery. After months of renovations, an open house welcomed the community to the Council's newly renovated basement. With help from several local organizations, the new room is finally complete with new lighting and stone walls. The space will serve as a classroom and art supply storage for the Tioga County Council on the Arts. With Spring around the corner, the Council is getting ready to kick-off a new schedule of art classes for both children and adults. In addition to the new classes, a special event called "Artfully Squared" will be held April 1. "We're inviting community members, artists, and school kids to submit pieces of artwork and donate them to the arts council. Then we will have a big show and sale of all the pieces," said the Council's Executive Director, Abbey Hendrickson. A schedule of the Council's events and exhibits can be found on their website.
