Newark Valley, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A $119,000 grant will help keep Newark Valley firefighters breathing in critical situations.

New York's Democrat Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand campaigned for Newark Valley to receive the grant from the Department of Homeland Security as part of the agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

The money will be used to upgrade the department's SCBA gear, which helps the firefighters breathe in smoke filled areas.

The SCBA units in use now are 16 years old.

The Newark Valley Fire District is supported by 25 firefighters.
