SRBC: Flood Warnings in Jeopardy

February 5, 2013 Updated Feb 6, 2013 at 11:18 AM EDT

(WBNG Binghamton) According to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, the Southern Tier could be flying in the dark when it comes to flooding; that's if federal funding isn't secured by March 1.

The SRBC is appealing to federal lawmakers for $215,000 to keep 18 stream gauges and 16 rain gauges active in the Southern Tier.

Those gauges generate data used by the National Weather Service to predict when and where flooding will occur so that residents and businesses can be warned.

The Southern Tier has seen two major floods in the past seven years -- in June 2006 and September 2011.
