Oxford, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The New York Health Department will have the former Veterans Home in Oxford demolished this Fall.

The building on state highway 220 has been vacant since a new facility opened in November of 2009.

The State Dormitory Authority says Wednesday is the last day to receive bids from contractors.

Leaders in Chenango County had hoped to convince the state to save the building and reuse it for another purpose.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health, Jeffrey Hammond, issued this statement to Action News.

"The Department investigated and we also reviewed a variety of options for the final disposition of the old building. In that review and investigation, we considered the results of a number of deliberations and a feasibility study that was conducted in October 2008, and the many suggestions from concerned New Yorkers and other interested parties. None of these suggestions and proposals were determined to be viable or financially feasible for the facility."

The State Dormitory Authority will do six week review on the bids and then award the contract for demolition.
