Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton Police were called to a motorcycle crash at 434 Eastbound near the Pennsylvania Avenue exit at approximately 10:12 p.m. Sunday.

The Binghamton fire medics responded and it was determined a male was deceased. A female, who was critically injured, was immediately transported to Wilson Hospital Trauma Center where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The female was identified as Binghamton Police Officer Katie Brown, a three year member of the department. Brown was 28-years-old and was a City of Binghamton resident.

The male victim was identified as Christopher Stoeckel, a former member of the Binghamton Police Department who served from March 2008 until October 2012. Stoeckel was 35-years-old.

Police believe Stoeckel was the driver of the motorcycle. Brown was the passenger. Stoeckel lost control and struck the guide rail, both were ejected. Speed was a factor and toxicology results are pending.

“Once again our local law enforcement community is mourning the loss of a police officer, “ said Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski. “We have not had a chance to completely mourn the loss of Officer Dave Smith and now we are faced with the loss of Officer Katie Brown. This is a very difficult time for the Binghamton and Johnson City Police Departments and all local law enforcement.

The men and women of the Binghamton and Johnson City Police Departments would like to thank the community and area law enforcement agencies for their continued support through these difficult times as we mourn the loss of both officers’ Smith and Brown.”

Funeral services for Officer Brown are being arranged by her family and services will be held in her home state of Indiana.

The accident remains under investigation.
