Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A fire in downtown Owego nearly 12 years ago left what some residents describe as "a major eyesore."

But now, a project aims to spruce the space with a community park.

Workers began the foundation of the Gateway Park project Wednesday on Front Street.

Steel beams were put in place for a large deck and surrounding walls were painted.

The Gateway Community Park Committee raised $60,000 for phase one, through a facebook campaign and donations from local businesses.

"We wanted to give the community something to look at that kind of take away the pain of losing the building and give them something to use in this space. Basically to say, we're here to stay, we care about our community, we want it to look better," says Chairperson of the Gateway Community Park Committee, Lisa Curatolo.

The first phase of the project which includes the deck and stairs down to the Riverwalk will be ready in time for the Owego Strawberry Festival next weekend.
