Upgrades to an Owego facility could carry a heavy price tag for Village residents.
The Village is looking at spending $7.2 million dollars to improve the wastewater treatment facility.
The facility is currently not in compliance with the Chesapeake Bay Watershed regulations.
These regulation require facilities to reduce the amount of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen that are making their way into the Bay.
The improvements will hopefully better manage and reduce these nutrients.
The Village of Owego is looking at several grants to offset the costs.
"We'll be looking at grant funding through multiple sources. We do have a Green Innovative Grant Program grant for over $700,000 dollars. We're going to be pursing funding sources such as USDA Rural Development and the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation and the balance would fall on the residents of the Village of Owego, " says Mickey Lehman, Bernier & Carr Associates.
At this time there is no immediate deadline forcing the Village to comply with Chesapeake Bay regulations.
However, the Village could incur a financial penalty at some point if it does not comply with the regulations in the future.
