Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Local Catholics kicked off Holy Week Sunday at St. James Church.

More than 600 people attended the Palm Sunday mass that represents the beginning of Holy Week and the final week of Lent.

"It commences Holy Week," Father John Donovan said. "We celebrate not only the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we also celebrate the Passion of Christ as we read the entire Gospel passage of this sentencing and crucifixion."

This was one of the first masses after the election of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit leader of the Catholic Church. Donovan said these first holidays will set the tone for Francis' papacy.

Holy Week continues with Holy Thursday, Good Friday and finally Easter Sunday.
