Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Friends and family in Binghamton remembered a man through playing basketball.

The 9th annual JT basketball tournament was held on Riverside Drive Sunday afternoon.

The tournament started as a way to honor the memory of Jeff Thiel, who was a father and teacher's aide at Binghamton West Middle School.

He unexpectedly died in his sleep on July 6, 2005.

Mike Thiel, organizer of the event, said it's wonderful to see so many people come back year after year to pay respect to his father.

"It's really great, I mean, all the support. Everybody has been behind me this entire year. Everybody looks forward to it. This is one of the highlights of the year for a lot of my friends," said Mike Thiel.

There were a total of 12 teams who played in the tournament.
