Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) As part of a week long memorial to honor police officers both fallen and active, a breakfast starts the day off showing gratitude to those who serve.

The breakfast started 31 years ago. This year's event took place at the Holiday Inn Arena.

The guest speaker was a retired sergeant from Maryland State Police.

Police recruits sat among the officers who are on the job daily.

"There's a lot of calls that are not really publicized that are very dangerous. Even a traffic stop. You never know what's in each particular car," said Paul Burnett with the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Association.

The remainder of Police Memorial Week includes Wednesday's golf tournament, displays at the Oakdale Mall and Friday's hockey game at the Chenango Ice Rink.
