New York, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Nearly 12 years after the attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and killed thousands of people, a piece of one of the planes has been found in lower Manhattan.

A piece of landing gear was found by surveyors wedged between 51 Park Place and the building behind it, 50 Murray St., Thursday morning.

The equipment is believed to be from one of the commercial airliners that crashed into the Twin Towers on Sept. 11.

New York City police are treating the area like a crime scene until a review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is completed. Then a decision could be made over whether to sift the soil for possible human remains.
