(WBNG Binghamton) The holidays are usually a high time for volunteering and County Executive Debbie Preston underscored the importance Thursday, urging local residents to lend a hand.

Preston was joined by representatives from the community and volunteer groups from all over the county.

They discussed the need for volunteers year round but also praised the community for coming together when it is needed most.

Preston said, "In these difficult times all these groups share one common concern, and that is membership and volunteer level, and I've always felt that Broome county is a caring a compassionate community."

She hopes people will be more generous with their time with a goal of making Broome County state wide leader in volunteerism.
